Does Couples Therapy Really Work Online?
It’s a fair question.
For a lot of people, therapy feels like something that should happen in an office. Sitting across from your therapist can feel more personal, more intentional, and maybe even more “real.” So it’s understandable to wonder if something gets lost when you’re meeting through a screen.
The good news is that online therapy can still be meaningful and effective. Research has found that video therapy can support similar outcomes, satisfaction, and connection between clients and therapists. That includes couples therapy too.
And there are actually some benefits to doing therapy online.
You don’t have to rearrange your entire life to make it to therapy.
Between work, traffic, childcare, dinner, and everything else that already fills your week, adding another appointment can feel like a lot.
With online therapy, you can skip the commute and join your session from wherever you have a private space. Making therapy easier to fit into your life can also make it easier to stay consistent, which matters when you’re working on meaningful changes in your relationship.
You’re meeting in the context of your actual life.
There can be something really valuable about talking about your relationship while you’re in the space where your relationship actually happens.
You might be sitting on your couch or in another space where you feel comfortable. You’re not having to leave your life behind to talk about it.
And sometimes, that makes it easier to be honest and talk about what is actually happening between you.
You don’t have to live near a couples therapist.
Online therapy also means you have more options when it comes to finding the right therapist.
I work with couples throughout Washington State, so you don’t have to live near a therapist’s office to have access to couples counseling. Whether you’re in Spokane, Bellingham, or somewhere in between, you can meet with me from the privacy of your own space.
If you and your partner are in different locations, you can also join the same session from separate spaces as long as you are both physically located in Washington State during the session.
What do you actually need for online therapy?
Nothing complicated.
You’ll need a device with a camera, a reliable internet connection, and a private place where you can talk openly.
Privacy is especially important for couples therapy. You both need to feel comfortable being honest and having difficult conversations without worrying about someone else overhearing.
Is online therapy right for everyone?
Not necessarily. If there are significant safety concerns in the relationship, an active crisis, or other circumstances that require a higher level of care, couples therapy may not be the right starting point. In those situations, I’ll help you figure out what kind of support makes the most sense.
And while therapy can be an important part of your mental health care, it isn't a crisis service. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 911. You can also call or text 988 for crisis support.
But for the things couples commonly come to therapy for, feeling disconnected, having the same arguments over and over, struggling to communicate, rebuilding trust, or simply wanting to understand each other better, online therapy can be a really good fit.
You don't have to add another commute or another complicated appointment to your life to work on your relationship.
Sometimes making therapy easier to fit into your life is what makes it easier to keep showing up.
If you’re curious about what working together would feel like, you can start with a free 15 minute consultation. The consultation takes place over the phone, so we can talk about what you’re looking for and whether I might be a good fit for you before you decide to start therapy.
This article is educational and general. It is not therapy, and it can’t replace care from a licensed clinician who knows your situation. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 any hour, or call 911 in an emergency.
